Mexican Tin Art
Brought over with the colonists as a basic material for utensils and wares, tin soon became a
medium for art in Mexico. Because of its wealth of minerals and prominent mining industry,
the state of Guanajuato is where the countrys tinsmith tradition began. Artisans cut, beat,
stamp, shape, punch, etch, or press the tin by hand into an endless array of practical and
decorative pieces. One can see the artists inventiveness and skill in the boxes, frames,
stars, figures, and religious objects made from this simple material.
